"Home of the Cotton Pickin' 100"
Drake Is The Top Cotton Picker!!!
Columbus, MS - Billy Drake is a true survivor.
No one but a true survivor could have taken on and tamed Magnolia Motor Speedway this past weekend. With an uncharacteristically rough track surface due to heavy rains during the week, only the toughest drivers and equipment - with luck on thier side, to boot - could weather the punishment dished out by The Mag.
77 Super Late Models had come to compete in the $15,000-to-win 3rd Annual Cotton Pickin' 100. Track workers fought an uphill battle all weekend as they attempted to smooth the surface and bring out the usual "black ice" at the 3/8-mile venue, going so far as postponing Super Late Model heat races until Saturday afternoon. Little headway was made, but the show went on.
Drake would take the lead of the 100-lap main event with just 6 laps remaining as David Breazeale, who had led and battled with Drake since lap 58, jumped a rut in turn 2, knocking a sizeable chunk out of his radiator but able to continue. Drake would go on to win as Billy Moyer, Jr. worked his way around the rebounding Breazeale, whose Jay Dickens powerplant held on during the final laps despite essentially being out of water.
Chris Wall and Derrick Rainey would round out the top five in a race that saw plenty of wild action, with Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, Terrance Nowell, Billy Moyer, and Jamie Elam all leading at some point in the event. Nowell would lead the rest of the top ten to the line, followed by Mike Boland, Chris McElhenney, Anthony Rushing, and Ray Cook.

Wall Tops Bud 50

Columbus, MS - Chris Wall returned to dominating form with the final race of the Mississippi State Championship Challenge series at Magnolia Motor Speedway. The $2,500-to-win Bud 50 brought 39 Super Late Models to The Mag Saturday night as well as a healthy dose of competitors in all divisions.
Following a complete restart, Garrett Durrett would take the early lead from polesitter Jay Blair - an all-Louisiana front row - as Rick Rickman charged in on the high side to challenge Jason Smith for third place. Rickman would fall back to go three-wide with Ronny Lee Hollingsworth and the quickly advancing Wall, who started 10th after transferring from a B-Main. Wall would win the battle to move into 4th on lap 2 as Durrett charged ahead, building a big lead.
Smith would overtake Blair for second on lap 4, and Wall would move into 4th on lap 5 and chase down Smith. The two began racing hard for position, all the while reeling in Durrett as Hollingsworth also picked his way up to 4th behind them. Wall would take second place on lap 9 as he and Smith pulled up to Durrett's bumper. Wall's bid for the lead began on lap 12 and ended on lap 13 as he took over the point on the frontstretch.
The leaders began to move into lapped traffic on the following circuit, with Smith moving around Durrett. A lap 20 caution - the only scored yellow flag of the event - would come out for the stopped machine of Shawn Edwards with Wall, Smith, Durrett, Hollingsworth, and David Ashley in the top five.
Hollingsworth dispatched Durrett on the restart and went after Smith for second place as Wall began to move out in the lead. Smith would hold on, and a hard 4th-place battle ensued between Durrett, Jay Blair, and Mike Boland. The field then began to settle, with Wall, Smith, Hollingsworth, and Durrett all running far ahead of the competition and far apart from each other for the last 20 laps.
Wall went on to take the win over Smith, Hollingsworth, and Durrett. Scott Dedwylder moved up to complete the top five, with Boland, Blair, Ashley, Johnny Stokes, and Billy Peden following in the top ten. MORE
