Jimmy Cliburn Claims 5th Annual Governors Cup at Magnolia Motor Speedway
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Columbus, MS (6/07/08) - Jimmy Cliburn held off Dane Dacus to capture the $5,000 first place prize in the Super Late Model division at Magnolia Motor Speedway this weekend in the 5th Annual Governor’s Cup presented by Coca Cola.
With a huge field of 40 Super Late Models on hand to do battle at the beautifully groomed Magnolia Motor Speedway, Cliburn was able to best Dane Dacus at the end of the race as Dacus was out front for most of the 60 lap contest. Dacus was also trying to win for the second time this season, which would have automatically qualified him for the Cotton Pickin’ 100 event in October. Rounding out the top 5 in the action-packed event were Jason Cliburn, Shep Lucas, and Jimmy Ward.
Shay Knight, from Columbus, conquered the Open Wheel Modified field to join the winners circle for the third time this season at Magnolia Motor Speedway. He did it in grand fashion as he was only challenged for short periods of time before pulling away from the field to capture the feature triumph. Knight was followed at the line by Jeremy Shaw, Bryan Brock, Jay Burchfield, and Trinity Wyers to round out the top 5.
Tony Silvestri took the top spot in the Street Stock feature. Silvestri had been knocking at the door for the top spot in each of this year’s events at Magnolia Motor Speedway, and hefinally made it all the way to the top spot after a great battle at the front of the pack. Rusty Duncan, David James, Scott Gable, and Marvin Beard completed the top five positions.
T. K. King of Columbus matched Shay Knight’s season high of three wins by taking the top spot in the Late Model Stock division. Jason Milan, Jeremy Kelly, J.R. Parmer, and Anthony Harrell rounded out the top 5 finishers, but no one had anything for King as he cruised to victory.
A strong field of 26 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series competitors saw Chad Thrash hold off Mark Stokes of Columbus to capture the winner’s prize. The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series featured the ever growing crate engine power plants that have proven to be very reliable and competitive as well thus far into the 2008 season at MMS. At the checkered flag Shawn Edwards was third, Ben McCreary 4th, and Tony Shelton was 5th.
Magnolia Motor Speedway will return to action Sunday, June 29th with the Firecracker 4 Crown Series event presented by Cliburn Tank Lines.
