Magnolia Motor Speedway Enjoys Most Successful Night in Facilities History
Columbus, Mississippi (7/15/09).- Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi hosted its first ever invasion by the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series (LODLMS) for the Columbus Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Lucas Oil Clash on Saturday night, July 11th.
A near capacity crowd, a stellar field of 47 Super Late Models, and a total car count of 130 entries were on hand. The event, which was presented by the Columbus Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CCVB) was a huge success, and James Tsismanakis from the CCVB was on hand to enjoy all of the action.
In addition the Speed TV cameras were on hand to catch all of the action in the Lucas Oil Late Model Series division for a future airing, and what an exciting event they captured. The airing dates for the one hour special will be announced at a later date.
The night got underway with Chris Wall from Holden, Louisiana setting fast time around the 3/8 mile oval. Wall would draw a “0” for the invert, which meant that the four Super Late Model heat races would start straight up. Billy Moyer, Jimmy Cliburn, Bub McCool, and Earl Pearson Jr. would go on to claim heat race wins with Jon Blankenship and Wendell Wallace each claiming wins in the twin b-mains.
With the feature grid set, Billy Moyer and Bub McCool held down the front row for the 50 lap, $10,000 to win event. Early in the event Moyer and McCool would duel for the lead as three and four wide racing reigned supreme throughout the pack. McCool’s luck would go south early in the event after having a tire go flat via contact on a restart with Dale McDowell. Moyer would maintain himself as the man to beat at the front of the pack for the entire event, fighting off a late charge from 14th starting Chris Wall to take the win in front of the huge crowd and the national cameras. Wall, Earl Pearson Jr., Jimmy Owens, and Dan Schlieper rounded out the top five in the star-studded field.
The support divisions also put on their own stellar performances as Eric Cooley used a daring pass in lapped traffic late in the race to take the lead from Mike Boland in the NeSmith Weekly Crate Late Model division, which drew 28 entries for the event. Cooley would go on to take the win over Boland and Mark Stokes.
In the Late Model Stock division with 20 entries on hand, TK King outran Joey McKinney and Justin Carter to pick up the feature win.
The heavy metal, Street Stock division saw Trey Bright top a thirty-five car field of competitors to beat Jamie Sudduth and Brandon Hardin to the checkers.
Magnolia Motor Speedway will return to action on Saturday, August 1st with the Back To The 50-60’s Night featuring a vintage car show PLUS a Weekly Racing Series, which will be highlighted by Super Late Models, Late Model Stock, Open Wheel Modifieds, NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Models, Street Stocks, Stingers, and Mini Stocks.
